THREE HEARTS

39023903The last 38 weeks plus 3 days have been an amazing journey, feeling our twins grow directly beneath my heart. Today I wanted to share a personal post with you from all of the things we did to help conceive our babies to what it was like being pregnant with twins.

My husband and I tried to have a baby a few months after returning from our trip to Africa. Since I had to take malaria prevention tablets before, during and after our trip, I wanted to make sure I was completely off the malaria prevention tablets and have the drugs out of my system before we tried to conceive to reduce any possible complications they could have on our babies. After two months of failing to get pregnant, the engineer/planner in me took over by researching and creating a plan that would help me increase my chances of conception. Mind you, I took the drastic measure of reducing anything that was stressful in my life. This meant taking a step back on some personal startup ideas I was researching, adjusting my schedule to make life a little easier, eating healthy and starting to take prenatal vitamins. Before we knew it, we were pregnant!3901

I remember our first visit to the obstetrician when they found not one but two little hearts flickering in the ultrasound. Our reaction went from smiling ear to ear to gushing tears of joy. We came into the doctors office just to see their heart flicker and to find out if everything was okay, but instead, we received an amazing surprise finding out we were expecting twins. I wish I could say both my husband and I wanted to be surprised during the delivery regarding the gender of our babies, but we don’t do surprises very well. Especially when we were going to pull out all the stops in decorating their nursery (the only room in the house that’s fully furnished).

Overall the pregnancy was very smooth that I was blessed to only feel a minor hint of nausea and indigestion in the last five weeks of the pregnancy. We went through a series of standard tests to make sure that we didn’t have any problems with gestational diabetes (the one day I was seriously sick because the glucose drink I had to consume was eeek!), a slightly low platelet count during pregnancy (which I was guilty of and had to be tested over and over and over again to make sure it didn’t go too low), and a blood test to check my ferritin level (which was also super low).

During the pregnancy I connected with some amazing ladies and you, my followers. All of these ladies gave me wonderful advice on what to expect during my pregnancy, what I could do to prepare myself for a smooth pregnancy and helped me identify what items I needed to get to make life easy when the twins were born. The support and private messages I received from all of you, my followers, was amazing. Both my husband and I feel truly blessed with all the love and support we received from you. Some of my followers, bless their heart, sent some amazing gifts for our twins that brought me to tears for sharing our joy and making our twins feel so welcomed into this world.

Because the pregnancy was considered high risk (due to my carrying twins), I intentionally made a decision to surround myself with everything that radiated positive energy. I picked up a book I have read cover-to-cover three times and read it the fourth time. I went back to listening to NPR (something I used to listen to every morning on my commute to work) caught up on some TED Talks, fun fact – I started watching TED Talks a while back when my close friend was invited to speak a few years back. Ever since then, I have been hooked and have had the fortune to watch one more friend grace their stage. Throughout my pregnancy, I took a closer look at my life and analyzed everything that I put my energy into – family, friends, career, charity work and engaging with various communities. I strengthened the relationships that brought me joy and a feeling of completeness – like family, friends and charities (especially charities). In the end, I was happy because I surrounded myself with people that brought out the best in one another and supported one another creating a positive environment (more on this in a future post).39043905

In this post, I wanted to share a look that I gravitated towards throughout my pregnancy. If you look at my style throughout my pregnancy, you will notice I didn’t purchase anything from the maternity section or maternity store. I made a conscious decision to explore the plus size selection during my pregnancy – the petite plus size selection to be more specific. The end result, I felt amazing because I didn’t sacrifice my style for the sake of my growing mid-section. The trick is to pick items made of material that has a bit of stretch.

This look was perfect when I hit 33 weeks up until the last few days of my pregnancy. I picked up the coat from Le Chateau and surprise, surprise…it’s a size small and fits me perfectly! Even with the growing bump! Another item that was a perfect fit was this amazing pair of MaxMara boots I scored for a steal at HR2….like a 70% off steal! I will fully admit that my feet swelled up by a full size in the last 2 months of my pregnancy so getting these boots was a life saver to keep my feet toasty warm and to help me keep my style in check. Plus, they were incredibly comfortable and I love the mix of  material. If you live in the Toronto area and are looking to score fab designer finds at a steal, you need to visit HR2 in Vaughan Mills. It seriously is the best place to grab luxe finds with zero guilt.
